What is Chiropractic?

The World Health Organisation defines Chiropractic as:

A health care profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders of the neuromusculoskeletal system and the effects of these disorders on general health. There is an emphasis on manual techniques, including joint adjustment and/or manipulation with a particular focus on spinal misalignment.

Chiropractic as we know it today was founded in the late 19th century by the Canadian therapist Daniel David Palmer. However spinal manipulation has a much longer history than the modern chiropractic techniques developed by Palmer. Spinal adjustment has been a part of traditional therapies in ancient civilisations and eastern medicine going back thousands of years.

There are classical Greek texts which describe how the spine is involved in the correct functioning of the body.

Modern Chiropractic therapy is backed by evidence-based research published in the worlds most respected medical journals. Chiropractic continues to gain credibility and respect from mainstream medical institutions. In Australia the government officially recognises the benefits of chiropractic care with the funding of chiropractic treatment under Medicare’s Extended Primary Care (EPC) program.

What is Spinal Misalignment?

Misalignment of the spine mostly comes from a small dysfunction of the spinal articular joints. These can cause back pain and/or referred pain when nerves and soft tissue around the spinal vertebrae become irritated.

What conditions can be treated by a chiropractor?

Modern chiropractic practice treats a range of problems that are due to issues with the spine, ligaments, tendons and nerves. Some of the conditions that our Spectrum Health Chiropractors treat are:

Who regulates chiropractors in Australia?
